USA vs. Italy Prematch thoughts
Posted on 6/13/09 at 2:00 pm

I am bored and wish to start a pregame thread way too early.
Who will Bob put in the other central mid role?
What formation should the Yanks employ?
You know how I know Rossi is ghey?
Rossi, how bad will we lacerate him?
How bad will our defense be lacerated?
Can we capitalize on Italy's defensive brand of footy?

Let's see where to begin........
I would love to see Clark at the defensive mid with Adu as the other mid.
I think 4-4-2 is what we should go with.
As for everything else...i have no clue

Well Bradley will get one spot...and I like Torres for the other.

does jones get the nod already?

Is Rossi even expected to play? Wouldn't the Italians be more likely to go up top with Toni and Gilardino?
As for the US, I would like to see:
Howard
Spector-Onyewu-Bocanegra-Bornstein
Bradley-Clark-Feilhaber
Dempsey-Donovan
Altidore
4-5-1 would be the right formation in this game because the you don't want to give much space to the Italian counter attack. Unfortunately, Mastroeni has been pretty weak the past few games and Jones is not yet available, so the center midfield spots are probably too offensive for this game, but I can't think of a better option.
Maybe Torres? I definitely don't want to see Beasley.

Mastroeni didn't make the roster for Confederations Cup.
I like Feilhaber too
4-4-1-1 would be the best formation IMO.
Howard
Spector-Gooch-DeMerit-Bocanegra
Dempsey-Bradley-Torres-Feilhaber
Donovan
Jozy

This seems fine, too. I'm not dead set on Clark or any of the other defensive/center mids, although I think Bradley is probably the best eligible player.
I just don't think that DeMerit is a good enough central defender to put up against the Italians. I realize Bornstein is also unproven, but I feel like I know DeMerit isn't good enough, while with Bornstein, I just don't know.

Wow, completely forgot about Bradley.
Scratch Clark and sub Bradley...I love Feilhaber, Adu, and Torres...so any one of those 3 for the other mid spot is fine with me.

Adu won't start. I guarantee you he won't.

We need to get Torres on the field more. I was at the Guatemala game and he appeared to be one of the few guys who was possession oriented. We have a tendency to play kickball in spurts before settling down.
I just want him to get a fair chance at a starting role at least.

I like Torres but I do not believe the US should be trying to play a possession oriented game. We have size and speed, but we do not have the same level of ball skill as the Europeans or Brazil/Argentina. So why should we even attempt to adopt a strategy which plays away from our strengths and plays into theirs?
I believe one of the things holding back US soccer is our pathological need to be like Europe and gain their approval. Screw it. Change the game. Don't play their style. It's a losing strategy.

You make a good point Baloo but I would still like to see us keep a little better possession at times. If we can retain and push the ball up the sides, cross the ball and let our taller/stronger athletes win the ball in the air we will have a lot of success.
And as much as I like Jozy, the kid can't turn on the ball worth a shite. He certainly fits the kickball mold (and he is great at it), needs to get a run on the ball while facing goal to be dangerous.

And to further your point Baloo, we kind of remind me of the French teams of past. They have always played long ball and just outran people. And they have had "some" success.
Posted on 6/13/09 at 3:20 pm to TigerPaul
The we're in agreement. Because I like Torres as well and it's not like ball skills are worthless. so long as we're not trying to be the Dutch, we could use some possession guys, as longas it's part of a strategy to feed our physical guys in the middle.
We just don't need another Reyna. A guy making these pretty little touch passes that go nowhere and don't fit the team's flow at all.

Italy always starts off slow in tournaments, so it's good to play them first, that's when they're vulnerable (see 3-0 beat down by Holland at Euro 2008, mediocre group stage at 2006 WC).
That said this is the Confederations Cup. Are they even playing their first team? This isn't a real tournament, it's just a warm up for the host country, my native South Africa.

What you are describing reminds me a lot of Senegal '02.
