3 New NCAA Basketball Rule Changes.....

the third is horrible

now we have new rules. Three, in fact. The first: Referees can now look at instant replay to determine flagrant fouls and ejections. Good rule.

The second: When a free throw shooter is injured, the opposing coach must now select one of the team's players from the four on court. (Previously, the team's own coach could sub in anyone he wanted.) Another good rule.
quote:
The third? Bad rule : Secondary defenders must establish position outside the area between the backboard and the front of the rim to draw a charge call.

I like all of those rules, especially #2.

the ref has to now decide between block or charge and where the foul takes place. thats why

Think about it. Block-charge is already nearly impossible to call. Referees, despite our throaty protestations to the contrary, usually do a good job calling it. But now the NCAA is asking them not only to decide correctly between blocks and charges, but also the NCAA wants referees to take into account where the player's feet are -- because that's how you establish position -- in relation to the area between the backboard and the front of the rim. Little, normal-human-sized refs now have to see a 6-foot-8 player's feet, the basket and, oh yeah, whether or not the offensive player was under control, or initiated the contact, or any of the hundreds of other little nuances that make calling blocks and charges incredibly difficult in the first place.
AM I THE ONLY ONE HERE THAT SEE'S A PROBLEM WITH THIS??

oh my god, they have to look for two things at once

if a player is that close to the goal, it shouldn't be a charge. I want the circle in college basketball

i really not a big fan of the second rule. you should not be rewarded after fouling, like agressively fouling the best free throw shooter and pick there worst to shoot.

it use to be they could choose anyone to shoot, this helps the team getting fouled

No. Before, if 45% big man on team A got fouled and was "hurt", 90% shooting guard could be subbed in for him by team A's coach to take the shots. Now if 45% big man on team A gets "hurt", team B'S coach chooses whoever he wants on the floor.
Great rule change, IMO.

They needed to adress how many friggin time outs there are, especially in a televised game. The game is too slow! They also should have considered shortening the shot clock to 30 seconds. Oh, and like the NBA, there should be no substitutions after the last made free throw. I think those three things alone would make for far better and more watchable college basketball.

Basically, you can't be under the basket and take a charge. I don't think this will be as hard as some think to enforce.

Hasent it always been a rule (maybe unwritten) that you dont get a charge call if you are under the goal?

il trust you on that. I thought i remember the Marquette game in the tourney where i player got hurt and someone subbed in for them chosen by the opposing team, but i probably have it backwards

The third is a great. Duke takes so many charges by sliding under people who have already left their feet, while standing directly under the goal. Good rule.

#2 is b.s.! if a team hacks a guy so bad that he can't get to the line and the coach only has 4 to choose from-who is getting rewarded here?
#3 is asking for trouble-you asking a short ref to make not 1 but 2 judgement calls while he is trying to see around guys that at least a foot taller than him?

i agree with both.
i think that charge/block is such a judgement call, that adding another rule to it, only makes it that more judgemental, hince more room for error for the ref.

What you'd have before was a late game situation, a big man would get "hurt" while getting fouled, and would conveniantly be allowed to substitute a great FT shooter in for him. Then, he was miraculously "recovered", and put back in on D after the FT's. Come on.
The chances of a guy getting legitimately hurt on a foul are slim. This is a great change.
