I would imagine some of you all just saw CFL and were surprised to hear Les Miles's name mentioned as one of the best in the nation for "big" games. Other names mentioned were Pete Carroll, Meyer from Florida and Bowden from Fla. State. Granted the sound bite was all of 2 seconds but at least his name was mentioned among the elite coaches. Pretty cool.

ESPN hates Penn State.
Paterno has won the Orange Bowl (1968, 1969, 1973, and 2005), the Cotton Bowl (1972 and 1974), the Fiesta Bowl (1977, 1980, 1981, 1986, 1991, and 1996), the Liberty Bowl (1979), the Sugar Bowl (1982), the Aloha Bowl (1983), the Holiday Bowl (1989), the Citrus Bowl (1993), the Rose Bowl (1994), the Outback Bowl (1995, 1998, and 2006) and the Alamo Bowl (1999 and 2007).

So Paterno won a bunch of meaningless bowl games. How many did he win with a conference title on MNC on the line ?

5 times he was undefeated heading into the bowl games and won Orange '68, '69, '73, Fiesta '86 MNC, Rose '94. He also won the '82 Sugar Bowl for the MNC.

Paterno is one of the greatest coaches of all-time. He's accomplished alot since he was hired as the HC in 1966. Thats what, 43 years. However, his success has declined the past 10 years. Probably why he was left out. If he wasnt a legend he would have been.
In the last 10 years:
1999- Won Alamo Bowl
2000- 5-7 (no bowl)
2001- 5-6 (no bowl)
2002- Lost Capitol One Bowl
2003- 3-9 (no bowl)
2004- 4-7 (no bowl)
2005- Won Orange Bowl
2006- Won Outback Bowl
2007- Won Alamo Bowl
2008- Loss Rose Bowl

True, but over the past 4 seasons Penn State has been the Big Ten Champs twice. Also then why the hell is Bowden on the list?

Yeah, good point, not sure why Bowden is on the list if Paterno isnt. I feel the same way about him. He's been at FSU for 33 yrs. Had like 14 10-win or more seasons in a row. But really hasnt produced much since 2000.
ESPN doesnt make much sense. You include Bowden, leave off Paterno, but add Urban Meyer. Hell Meyer was born in 1964. Paterno started coaching in 1966.

He has recruited more thugs the past 5 yrs than most schools. Penn Stae fattened up on a Big East schedule. Since joining Big X,they have been average.Much tougher schedule each year!

Actually, they did mention "Big Game" Bob Stoops, then pointed out he's lost 5 straight BCS bowl games.

Wasn't Penn State denied a shot at the NC after going undefeated in Kerry Collins senior year?
