Star Wars: Kotor II

This game is incomplete and buggy and the frame rate is pretty terrible, but god damn this is an awesome experience despite ALL of that.
These games really perfected the D&D-based third-person combat. I like this game slightly better than the first because of the darker setting and story and the incredible character depth. The first had great character depth too, but this time there is more connection between the NPCs and your character. I also enjoy this one more because of what I feel is better character customization than the original game. KOTOR I always had me feeling like I was playing either a spellcaster or a pure fighter, no matter what class combination I chose. KOTOR II has special feats and unique characterizations that make the different classes and advanced classes much more interesting and give it more replay value. Even with the incredibly shitty ending this game is worth it. It's amazing how such a flawed product can end up so satisfying with brilliant writers and a very competent combat system. If Obsidian had not rushed to finish this, I can only imagine how much better it might have been. Nonetheless, I'm still playing it right now.. five years after its release... despite the half-assed effort on their part. I haven't been following that "Kotor II: TSL Restoration Project" much, but they did release a PC patch that fixed most of the bugs in the game. I don't know if they intend to fill any plot holes and create a more suitable ending, but if they do I might have to pick up the PC version.
Anyway, I just had the urge to play this AGAIN for about the 50th time and thought I'd praise it for some of you who might have overlooked it due to the heaps of criticism. You will finish the game, dissatisfied with the abysmal and laughable ending(s), but wanting to play it again.

i enjoyed the shite out of it, i liked the first one better though. great little twist.

Yeah, I think anyone who actually paid attention knew Kreia was the betrayer long before it was "revealed." And that is the major plot weakness in this game, I think... the game just falls off once you find all of the jedi. Malachor V is just a pain in the arse and the Sith academy there is entirely pointless.
I think I just enjoy this game more because it's not like "Woohoo it's the Star Wars Universe" anymore, and there's a very mature and dark storyline.

My only problem with the game was that even on the hardest difficulty it was toooo easy. I would just lightning everyone to death and when that got boring my saber would rape. In the first Kotor I was using medpacs like a mofo, however this game I don't think I used one.

The first one was harder, for sure. That Sith Lord at the base on Taris is damn near impossible on hard mode, with the way he basically puts everyone in stasis and makes you his bitch. I always pour major points into treat injury no matter what class I choose in that game. But in both games I was really too enamored with the Star Wars gameplay to be bored by the low difficulty (Yeah, I'm a huge star wars nerd), and to me using a lightsaber or blaster is awesome whether it takes a struggle or you mow everything down in a few hits.

I might add though, that if you play dark side in KOTOR II Master Vrook is the hardest fricking enemy to defeat in either game. I always have to do Dantooine third or last so I can have a decent lightsaber and some strong force powers when I face him.
It's worth it though, because playing dark side is really fun in that game.

What do you mean? In the end it didn't matter which side you chose, the game developers were too fricking lazy to create different endings. The end was thrown together in haste.

Well I already mentioned that the endings were horrible, but I thought the gameplay was more fun as a sith. More credits, a better follower, and your decisions have a lot of influence.

Yeah on the wiki page and a few other sources they explain that the development was cut short and rushed to finish so they could work on Jade Empire, allegedly there are independent programers working on patches to re-introduce the scenes cut from the original, probably the PC version only, and im not going to hold my breath, also there has been a rumor for years of a KOTOR III, or a MMORPG version, there is defiantly concept art and mock levels for a project that has been leaked, but who knows if it will be taken further, i think there will be some attempt to revive the series on the 360/PS3 ... check out youtube for some videos about it

ok, glad I caught this thread. I loved the KOTOR games and Jade Empire. I recently beat Fallout. Are there any other games with this sort of gameplay that are out there?

i have fallen out of the loop because i have not purchased a 360/PS3 to this point, but from what i understand for the xbox generation Jade Empire was the best of that style, i never finished the game, but i was enjoying it at the time, although there was a little disconnect with it because there was no background to get engulfed like the Star Wars Universe provided, maybe i need to dust of my xbox and see if i still have jade empire ... oh wait you might want to check out an older game called Way of the Samurai ... only for PS2 it was kinda unique for its time and has multiple scenarios i enjoyed it.

The MMORPG has been confirmed, but there's no release estimate. I imagine it will be sometime late next year or maybe even 2011 before we see it. Bioware's been busting their asses with Dragon Age and Mass Effect 2.
As for games like KOTOR and Jade Empire, I would say Neverwinter Nights for gameplay and the Baldur's Gate series for storyline. These are of course not up to par with the Xbox Bioware projects because of primitive graphics and the isometric view, and they are quite a bit more difficult to get the hang of. I would also recommend The Witcher (also by Bioware) as one of the best games out there right now, but you had better have a damn good computer with a damn good graphics card to run it.
Unfortunately, that's about all I can say for games based on the D&D system. Not many choices on the consoles outside of Bioware's projects as far as I can tell. If you have an XBox 360, Mass Effect (ALSO BY BIOWARE) is one of the best games for the console. The rest of the shite is mostly for the PC.

You have good taste in games Muppet.
The MMORPG is The Old Republic currently in development by Bioware. It's not quite KOTOR III, but better!

I'm in Austin where they are developing the game, and bumped into a programmer. He said with the content they put in so far, it's KOTOR 3-20. Pretty cool.

That is pretty cool. I can't wait for this game. Will probably get a new rig for it...and will take me away from WOW. I hope this is a great mix of all that works for LOTRO, KOTOR and SWG...
I know, I don't ask for much

i played KOTOR 1 several times one of my favorite games of all time but the 2nd one starts out so slow and could never get sucked into to it like the first one....Does the story line pick up and how far into it?
Posted on 5/2/09 at 5:11 pm to LSUfanatic60
I got into it pretty quickly, but I agree that the first level Peragus can be a pain in the arse. I'd say it really starts to pick up when you reach the polar academy on Telos and get your ship back.

quote:I hated Peragus. I'm glad its BIOWARE and not Obsidian making the MMORPG. Obsidian did a real crappy job of cleaning the final version of the game.
Peragus

Heck the plot in these games was better than the prequel movies.
And the dialogue was far less cheesy than the prequel movies.

Ain't that the sad truth of it?
