Sorry but Bose 3.1 cannot simulate 5.1 sound accurately. 1080P upscaler will not compare with blu ray. They are OK but you will just have Dolby compressed audio. Blu ray has HD lossless and 7.1 on many new movies. Best blu rays for picture/audio: I, Robot, Batman Dark Knight, Iron Man, Hellboy I/II, Master and Commander, Blade Runner, Black Hawk Down and any Disney Pixar movie.

thanks for telling me my 900$ system is a piece of shite

It's not a piece of shite...it's just overpriced. If it sounds good to you it is all that matters. Enjoy your sound system.
I tell people to get Onkyo receivers with Polk speakers ($500 combined) for the best bang for the buck. It is what I plan to get soon and move my Sony HTIB in the office.
I think my movie suggestions will still sound good and look good.

A Beautiful Mind. You can hear all the voices that are in Russell Crowe's head a lot clearer and they switch from speaker to speaker, its kind of freaky.

I have a blu ray player. I know they can play regular DVDs. What is diff in blu ray discs and regular DVDs as far as playback goes

blurays just have more special features - otherwise, not that much

Lord of The Rings, fellowship, when they are in the cave and you can hear the chain fall into the well and uses all the speakers and sounds goes from one side of room to another, really neaT, also the Lord of the Rings, where the Trees walk, fricking awesome, and I still have never watched the whole thing through, any of them haha
Also War of the Worlds, when the storm begins, and when the machine comes out of the ground, AWESOME sound

It's a known fact that any HD system, big screen or sound system, should be tuned with the movie "Fifth Element".
Color range and sound range are the tops.

Kill Bill vol 1 & 2. The music and sound effect are great and it sounds great. Although in vol 1 that damn fly fools me every time and I start to jerk my head. I'm an a-hole.

I liked Troy in HD. You could hear the whizzing of the spears go from side to side and hear it hit the ground behind you.
