What kind of resume do you need to get a commentator job?

let me guess, you think Jim Hawthorne sucks too?

He has his moments, but he really doesn't count. Of course he will side with LSU. He calls the games for LSU. I am talking about the commentators from national stations. (CBS, NBC, ESPN, FOX......)

Only one qualification needed.
Being an annoying loudmouth.

For the most part, commentators for Fox, CBS, etc... will always give love to the frontrunners, of which no.1 seed UNC is one almost every year. As far as qualifications for being an announcer, certainly not being a fat slob helps if you're on TV (John Madden notwithstanding). Also -- having a distinctive voice helps, being able to think quickly and put those thoughts into words, having an above average understanding of sports, and being able to communicate all of this while sounding like someone you would want to sit next to in the stands -- IMHO all of these things help make a good announcer. I think its one of those things that someone either has talent for or they don't, in some cases to varying degrees. The best announcers make their work look easy and are able to connect with most, not all, but most people.

Thats the part that grates on me. Its how we get players that are high drafts, yet stink up the pros. These players are godlike to the announcers, and viewers buy into that.
