Not flaming, not a Saban thread,

but what happened to this defense? Why can't we generate pressure like this consistently anymore?

WAs it the corners that could play man better?
Scheme?

More importantly, why can't our linebackers cover like that anymore?

B/c those guys had something to prove and a goal to obtain. The 2008 DL had already won a championship and nothing left to prove.

I guess the defense just seemed to get worse every year under Miles' tenure. Not saying Miles is a bad coach or anything, but the way I rank his defenses are:

2005>2006>2007>2008

2006 defense > 2005 defense.

offenses have changed as well...many are built to exploit pressure.

I think we have been a blitz happy defense lately and a lot of offenses, especially schools who frequently play us, are getting used to us.

Saban is probably the best defensive mind in college football. Miles is an offensive coach and his defensive coaching staffs have been a notch below Saban's. Especially in 2008. On the defensive side of the ball, discipline and attention to detail had been in major decline every year during the Miles tenure, until the house of cards just collapsed in 2008. This new staff should be a noticeable improvement, though.

Then how do you explain last year's lack of success, considering we never got pressure on any quarterback we played?

Bama played Florida a lot more competitively than we did.

Lets not lose sight of the fact that was lost 5 games this season

can't help but noticing Marquise Hill on the field. That guy was fun to watch.

I think this is difficult to explain but I think the amount of pressure a defense can put on is directly related to the man to man and zone coverage skills of the back 7 or 8. Saban was great at recruiting the guys for this and coaching them up. I think Miles and Co have recruited well but in 2008 the coaching was terrible and the talent was young.

You're not watching what I saw last year.

I'll agree with that. 2005 started off sloppy, but was lights out after the rough hurricane-affected start of the season. 2006 struggled at Arkansas.

I think we've got to give Miles the benefit of the doubt as a manager of the coaching staff. He started off with some problems, but so far he's 1-for-1 when getting the coordinator he wants. Let's hope he goes 2-for-2 with Chavis.
