Am I remembering that wrong from my childhood?

I'm no rules official or anything but I believe you may be thinking about the hand is part of the ball rule from basketball.

In baseball, if you are hit on the hand while holding the bat you are HBP.

The OP's question often comes into play when the batter is attempting to burst or otherwise swinging and the ball hits batter's hand.

If the ball hits the batter's hand while bunting, it is a dead ball and a strike.

Same result if the ball hits the hand while swinging, as the hand is part of the body, not the bat.

The hand is treated like any other body part. If you swing at a pitch and the ball hits you in the thigh it’s a strike. Has nothing to do with the hand being part of the bat.
