Was watching this documentary on him pre final four and due to my age and other factors was a bit confused about what made him a legend as a coach? Also how so many coaches choose for him to be their mentor when he was fairly average as a coach.

I understand Phil and Michael helping promote his brand. I am trying to figure out how he is some coaching legend

He was the first black coach in the PAC-whatever and turned around a bad Washington State Program.

He was certainly a legendary recruiter at Iowa when he replaced Lute Olsen. He underachieved in the tournament and Tom Davis took his talent rich team to the Elite 8 in season 1 after he got the USC job.

He wasn't a coaching legend but he had a decent coaching run. Wazzu had made the tourney once in history before him. But he was a legendary connector in the basketball industry as evidenced by all the people they got to sit for the doc.

More to do with his influence in basketball while at Nike and being a civil rights figure in the coaching industry.
