He has a passport but will expire soon expires in a year got it at 14 expires at 19 years of age, but he turns 18 here in May
Question do I renew it when his is 18 in May or do it early before he is 18

Is there a difference?

I don't know, the consideration for me would be a passport for anyone 16 and younger is only good for 5 years. This kid's passport will get the 10 year treatment so there may be no benefit to waiting outside of I suppose he could do all the work himself on the application.

Now that I think of it, I'd probably wait too so he wouldn't have to do the two parent authorization dance.

Whether he's 18 or 19 is irrelevant to the process as far as I can tell.

My only consideration would be how long he's going to be living with you. If he's about to go off to college, or enlist, or something, I'd do it now. Young adults, like ex wives, put stuff off forever, and and up not taking advantage of opportunities because they're not prepared.

Will be a new passport I believe. The cuttoff age is 16 I believe. After 16 it's a 10 year passport.

There is no real advantage either way. Whether applying now, at 18, or when it expires. It will be a 10 year passport.

The only difference is after he turns 18, he'll have to apply by himself with no parent needed
