What qualifies as an “assassination” as opposed to a “casualty of war”

I keep seeing news articles about third Iranian leader “assassinated” but aren’t we at war? Is it really considered an assassination? Or just another enemy combatant killed in war?

No one is assassinated in a war. They just get killed.
