Umpires got that wrong
Once a batted ball passes a defensive player (other than the pitcher) it cannot be interference.
I retract my statement:
Another Fielder's Play: If the ball passes the initial fielder but another fielder still has a reasonable chance to make a play, the runner is out if hit.

Walking Perez each time has worked well... especially in the 5th because that loaded the bases with one out. Rather end up giving up 1 instead of 3.
