Not too dependable so far in the season. Every time CJJ used Williams so far this season he has been a loose cannon disaster. Hopefully it’ll be a while before he loses another game for us

How may homeruns does Guidry have to give up before people realize that he’s not the guy you want closing when the meat of the order comes up. He is very good and has a role but Sheerin was the right call to close it after the tying run reached the plate.
JJ is still learning this team though. I was glad to see them fight back even though it was a loss. That is something to build on. There is just so much to clean up on this team that it’s going to take time to get this team where it CAN be.
1) clean up the mental and fielding errors. Why caraway tried to get the out at 2nd and not 1st is just dumb baseball. Arrembede needs to focus on catching the baseball. The pass balls are killing us.

2) We need Cooper Williams and Rizy back to throwing strikes. Both have regressed since last year and that’s 2 arms we need to step up. It was good to see Cowan step up last night.

3) Hitting with RISP is beyond pathetic, outside of Brown.

4) The biggest question is, do we actually have the talent to achieve the above goals or were the evaluations that far off? There are just so many issues that at some point this becomes a possibility.

He was great in the 8th inning. I always find it hard to understand when you have a pitcher like Cowan dominating, why shut him down after the 7th to bring in your closer?

Everyone can have bad nights, and you already know your long reliever is dominating. Why not keep him in? The risk of a bad night from your closer is greater than the risk of the lineup catching up the second time through the order to a pitcher dominating.

Not saying this decision is on Jay, and the analytics are probably on Jay’s side here because almost every coach does this. I just don’t see the results panning out like you’d expect, especially in college baseball.

The real issue is that LSU didn't find a lefty and righty closer in the portal. Guidry is not the pitcher he was two years ago.
LSU needed a dominating lefty to pitch in that situation and LSU simply doesn't have one. LSU apparently missed getting a lefty that is dependable or he would have certainly been brought in, especially since Guidry has just given up a hard single to right on the previous hitter.
He might be ok against rh hitters in the clutch, but lefties will hit him very hard, especially the top of / meat of lineups.

Agreed, I’ve been critical of Guidry in the same way. He’s a very solid guy, but nothing overpowering consistently. I’m still blown away he found 95/96 last night. You can’t ask him to cover 2 innings last night, that is on CJJ.

This staff just doesn’t have that shut down guy or has shown it yet (which isn’t a good sign since we are in SEC play).

Cooper Williams was excellent last year as a freshman. You expect a jump to his sophomore year, and you’d think at worse he’d just be similar to last year which is plenty good enough. That was your lefty reliever and somehow he regressed tremendously.
