That's wild. $700+ is a bit steep for casual players though.

Especially when you can play AI and other people for free on your phone or pc.

i believe the $700 is the price for the experience. not the game itself.

I don't play much anymore, but back when I used to routinely play for fun online, I found that, when I would occasionally play someone in person, I would have a much more difficult time reading the board, as I was used to looking at it top down instead of at an angle through pieces.

Now, doesn't mean I would pay $700 for this, but the experience is different.

I have found the opposite. I destroy the same people in person that I lose to in an online game setting. I suspect they are cheating though, which is why I stopped online play altogether.

Oh that’s a completely different animal. When I say I have a harder time seeing the board, I mostly mean that I’m more likely blunder on a physical board. I didn’t mean that I struggle against players in person that I was previously beating online.

But yeah, cheating in online chess is rampant.

It's a gimmick, but a good one. I recall decades ago there was a "Phantom" chess set or some such name, but reports were it was highly problematic, finicky, etc.

This seems to be the modern incarnation of that and it does look fun. Expensive, but fun.
