The French Quarter's Uncle Louie defines keeping still. The tall figure dressed in a French Quarter version of Uncle Sam keeps tourist attention and gets their dollars with a great solid stride and a tiny stuffed dog he affectionately calls Lil Willie. His street art is known nationwide and he has been the subject of as many photographs as The St. Louis Cathedral.

Miller, who claimed to have performed in the French Quarter since 1993, is known for his frozen statue street act in which he wears an Uncle Sam-style suit, hence his nickname “Uncle Louie.” Miller is considered a staple of the French Quarter and has been interviewed on several occasions by New Orleans media outlets.

During an extradition hearing on July 11th, Miller agreed to be transferred to Florida where he will face charges in connection to the May 22, 1974 murder of Freddie Farah during a botched attempted robbery.

Johnie Lewis Miller was on break, sipping a Budweiser tallboy. He couldn’t go more than a few minutes without being approached by people eager to greet him — even though less than a month ago he’d admitted to killing a Jacksonville grocery store owner in 1974 as part of an unusual plea deal that secured his immediate release from jail.

In 2006 following Hurricane Katrina, The Times-Union happened to photograph Johnie Lewis Miller, a popular mime who performs as "Uncle Louie" in New Orleans' historic French Quarter. A little more than a decade later he would be linked to 1974 murder in Jacksonville. [Bob Self/Florida Times-Union]
One woman out for a walk with her dog rushed up to Miller outside a convenience store in the 700 block of St. Louis Street, embraced him tightly and said, “I just had to come get a quick hug.”

Two other men who approached Miller to shake hands offered up, “You look good,” and, “Great to see you, man.”

I mean, you murder then you make a new life for yourself, whose to say your wrong in New Orleans?

Murder someone and you get to stand motionless for 10 hours per day in all kinds of weather begging drunks to give you $5 for the rest of your life…hell of a way to make a living.

The Jacksonville article is behind a paywall.

What's the deal with the plea deal that got him out of jail?

Following a guilty plea to second-degree murder, he was sentenced to time served (nearly one year in jail) and released in April 2018.

Johnie Lewis Miller recently admitted to killing 34-year-old Freddie Farah during a hold-up at the Grand Park Food Store off Kings Road but will not serve any more jail time after the state’s case against him fell apart when a key witness unexpectedly died. Miller, known as “Uncle Louie,” has been in jail 344 days. His admission of guilt to the Farah family and to the state was part of the plea arrangement.

quote:

He pleaded guilty this afternoon to second-degree murder in exchange for time served. He should be processed out of jail later today and also must pay $521 fine. Circuit Judge Angela Cox told him it took courage to tell the truth.
