Gossamer vs Zpacks vs Hyperlite

I’ve carried a ULA Ohm for over a decade and it finally has worn to the point I’m ready to replace it,
I’m partial to ULA, but have heard the hype around the pack makers listed in the title and seen many on the trail.
Anyone carry one of the three and if so, would you recommend it?

Buddy of mine has an unbound 40 and really likes it.
I’ve got a waymark thru and was disappointed when he folded last year. Absolutely love my bag.
My next bag will be from redpaw, evolved supply co, or palente when it’s time.
Not that any of the brands listed are bad, they don’t offer what I’m looking for in a bag.

I didn’t know that. eBay resale just went way up.
I didn’t even think about Redpaw. I’ve got some packing cubes from them and they’re great. Evolved I’ll have to check out. There are so many quality cottage vendors out there now.

What specifically are you looking for?

lol, maybe I’m old school, but I’m still rockin’ my old large ALICE ruck from the late ‘80s…

You’d be blown away by what’s available and the materials used in modern packs.
I’ve got a base weight of about 13lbs

My preference for general backpacking:
- roll top with a y strap on top. I find the y strap holds a bear canister better if I need to put it externally than just a standard strap.
- main pack. No brain. No pockets on the exterior. Just a main pack.
- full length stretchy back panel. Lycara would be my material of choice here
- hip belt pockets…. None. If they come with the pack make the modular so I can take them off. I find a Fanny pack is much more utilitarian than hip belt pockets.
- water bottle pockets. Two, tall, and accessible without taking the pack off
- trekking pole loops. Nice for storage. Don’t always use poles while walking but need the poles for my tent.
- shoulder straps……no water bottle pockets. Gimme some loops to hang something like my inreach but I can’t stand sewn in pockets.
I’ve got different preferences for hunting/scouting.

Zpacks can accommodate those needs, but they’ll charge you a premium despite less labor and material costs

Have you looked at hilltop? I know they’re known for their food bags, but another buddy of mine just got one of their packs and I was impressed with the quality.

No I haven’t. I’ll give them a look. I’m open to any pack that’s in the 30-35oz range with minimalist design.
