My favorite memory of Jose is during a timeout, the camera focused on Daddy Dale. All you could hear Dale say was "Jose, DON'T SHOOT!!!"
First time he touched the ball.....up goes a brick...Gotta love Jose...

Both wrong. It was Church's Fried Chicken on Highland.
Check out this piece from Sport's Illustrated on him.Threw an 86mph fast ball and played against Greg Cook in the Dom Republic.
Don't Shoot

Man I remember Jose Vargas. Dale Brown signed him to a letter of intent but he had already signed one with some two-bit college (forget what it was). They got him out of that one because whoever signed him didn't get his mother's signature and Dale claimed it was forged, making it null and void. Oh man, they were steamed but there was nothing they could do.
I used to talk to him on a regular basis while he was at LSU. He told me he hated doing interviews because he thought his English was so horrible. I tried to convince him otherwise. I don't think it mattered though, he tended to shy away from the press.

Game at Georgetown, I believe, though time could have twisted that memory as well.

Had a part-time job at Steinberg's down town for a few weeks back in those days. Jose and some other players walked in to talk to the mgr/owner. That was the biggest dude I've ever seen. Oh and also the darkest. Always said if there was ever a fight, I'd want to be on Jose's team. Did not get to talk to him but seemed like a nice guy.
Didn't Zoran have a car wreck or something and injure an ankle? He was out a few weeks.

Archive article on Vargas. This is great.

If Vargas were an automobile, he would sport one of those bumper stickers, so prevalent on the highways of Louisiana, that read s——HAPPENS. With Vargas at center, LSU's fortunes are at the mercy of the officials every time the ball goes into the post. On a typical possession Vargas violates so many rules—take your pick: three seconds, traveling, charging—that it's all the referees can do to sort out the infractions. And by the time they have, Vargas is likely to have either laid a brick or fumbled the ball away, thus rendering all that official consternation moot.

He was a super-nice guy. My neighor out on GSRI after he graduated and I've told the stories a dozen times on here so I won't repeat them but he was just a great guy. Everyone in that neighborhood loved him.

Loved by fans in the Assembly Center also. Always a crowd favorite. Seems like yesterday. The student section was rocking then. We would pile into rows and not even have a seat. Did not matter as we never sat down.
Where have the years gone? Wow.

One image that sticks in my head was him borrowing my little 1978 datsun pickup to move some of his stuff into storage..the dude's knees were literally touching the ceiling of the cab..don't ask me how he managed to work the clutch..

One of my first LSU bball memories was watching Jose Vargas.
I can still hear them announce his name when he scored.

Man, I remember a game in the PMAC my freshman year, Jose was there and we were playing Vandy when they were good...the student section was just killing this guy from Vandy named Alex Kessler. Dude had a butt-cut haircut and the student section would scream "Butt-cut" every time dude touched the ball.
Jose was laughing his arse off on the floor...just had a big ole smile on his face in the lane....
He was awesome...

Ok, in '86 watched Kentucky game at Sports Illustrated. Crowd went wild on Anthony Wilson's shot.

First year I got to LSU (1985) I saw a local station interviewing Nikita Wilson. It went something like this:
Nikita: We played hard. Well they played hard too. We had good offense and they had good offense. Wait what I said??

Cad, that's too much.
Man, I've enjoyed the stroll down memory lane. When did I get old?
Jose, "Whatever you do, don't shoot".
