Court documents detail the moments when Stephens County deputies arrived at the scene. According to witnesses, Phelps was sitting on the porch holding a child when the group heard someone shooting five to seven rounds over several minutes.

Documents say shortly after the shots were heard, Phelps shouted “ouch” and collapsed.

It was later learned that a bullet had travelled through Phelps’ arm and into her chest cavity, killing her.

Court documents allege that, after arriving, authorities began searching the area and learned that Cody Adams had gotten a Glock 45 for Christmas, and neighbors reported hearing him shooting throughout the afternoon. Deputies say Adams was shooting at a Redbull can on the ground in his backyard, and they note there was nothing behind the property to stop the bullets from traveling beyond the yard.

It’s stated in the documents that Adams became upset and began to cry when he was told his shooting may have caused Phelps’ death.
