Is it too much to ask for a coach to earn his paycheck??

I mean is it ever really a good idea to pay someone nearing retirement age a massive paycheck guaranteed over 10 years. You just gave them FU money; they don't need to earn anything at that point.
It seems that a mid-career coach with FIRE in him would be a better bet. Then pay him a good salary with lots of incentive type bonuses and the potential for the next contract to be the big one if things go well.
Just my 2 cents.
