Has anyone received a letter from the IRS stating your social security number has possibly been used by someone else to obtain employment? I Googled and it seems legit but I worry about scams.

I did that, and I went on the social security website and there isn’t any income reported that i didn’t earn. At least up to 2024 which is the most recent info on the site. But i read online that if someone is earning money under your name, it can mess you up when it comes time to collect social security, and possibly mess you up at tax time, like making you pay a higher amount or possibly not let you file if they file first. Idk. Nobody else has gotten one of these? It’s also weird that they sent it out but when you go to their website it tells you you can’t access the page it references for you to go to due to the government shutdown.

Well, yeah.

I figured on a site this size someone would know more about this than i do. As far as long term implications, etc. Or someone may have had this experience before.

The letter i got said i didn’t need to do the paper return or file the 14039. It advised me to file my tax return on time. Because i guess if the id thief files “theirs” before me, the IRS won’t accept mine without a lot of BS.

Fk scammers and thieves.

You can create an account on IRS.gov and there is a link to "View your mail from the IRS". This will show you IRS letters/notices they have sent you and you can confirm whether it is from them/legit.

You can request a PIN from the IRS online. IRS will issue a new PIN each year that will be required when you file your return. It will prevent someone from filing a fraudulent return under your number.
