Looking for advice for dove hunting with my kids aged 13 and 15 by this time next year. I grew up duck hunting in Delacroix but have not shot in 20 years. I've heard duck hunting is not that great anymore (fewer birds) and it's a big investment to get started again. I was thinking dove hunting would be an easier start.

I need to take the hunter safety courses. I bought my kids lifetime hunting and fishing licenses when they were babies, so they are good to go. I don't know anyone with property. How are the WMA's around an hour from Prairieville? How do they work? Do we just show up or do you need to secure a spot?

Sorry if these are dumb questions. I've been out of the hunting game for a while and I've never hunted a WMA.

Sherburne plants a dove field every year but the folks I know who go havent done well the past few years.

Are you dead set on bird hunting? Squirrel hunting is usually fun as frick for kids. You'd have a lot more public options for that.

I started Dove hunting at 10 years old. I was lucky my grandfather was a farmer and planted millet fields. All his farmer bodies did as well. Some of the best times of my life. I learned alot from those old guys. Best advice is to get them to start shooting skeet and learn how to lead a shot. If you have the funds book a trip to Texas. Brought my son several times. You might can find someone local that plants and hunts.

Didn't even think of squirrel hunting. That would be fun for us.

I really miss bird hunting and want to get back into it.

The kids need Hunter Safety if hunting unsupervised and for everyone born on or after Sept 1, 1969.

oh good to know. I thought they didn't need it until 18. They would always be with me or their grandpa.
