I have a computer that needs attention and didn't know if I should just bring it to Best Buy or anyone knew of anyone local that's good. The issue is it's really slow. It takes forever to do anything.

For the overwhelming majority home users, a computer that has become “too slow” is one that either has a full mechanical hard drive, a shite ton of unnecessary spy/bloatware, or both. A clean OS install and an SSD will cure practically all “too slow” ills.

So look at what I said..

too many people on this board dont start at the bottom of troubleshooting...A clean OS a new SSD and probably RAM, might solve this users issue...

but if its more than four or so years old, the cost outweighs a new machine

A clean OS install costs nothing. A new 1TB SSD is less than $50 and can be carried forward to the next build. At which point we have to spend another $50 for RAM, now we should be considering replacement, but that would depend on the age of the PC, and I would say four years isn’t enough. This isn’t the early 2000s.

It does if the machine is Win7

You're assuming this pc is new enough to be able to handle an SSD SATA connection

You just gonna slap whatever RAM you find on this MoBo ?

which is why we start there before we suggest things..

i get that some of you are "in tech", but Computer Science and actual work are different

Are we talking about five year old computers or fifteen to twenty year old computers?

16gb of DDR4 3600/16 with an integrated heat sink from a reputable company can easily be had for less than $50. If he needs something more exotic than that, we’re again talking 10+ year old computers.

My point is that “four years” is a silly cutoff in 2025. My “five year old” pc has a 5800x and a 3080. If it starts “running slow”, I guess it’s time to throw it out…

Hur dur.

Anyway, pissing match aside, I don’t know of any repair places in Alec. OP, if you want to give us some basic info about the computer and are willing to do some really basic DIY trouble shooting, we’d be happy to try to help

Do you need Winblows for any programs you run? If not, back up your files and install Linux. It's way better.

My first question was literally, "is it over four years old"....

I mean, i really could just stop right here and it proves my point in multiples

And my first and repeated responses were “four years is far too short of a cutoff”. Based on the OP, we are clearly talking to a computer neophyte. Telling them that a computer older than four years isn’t worth fixing is staggeringly bad advice, in my opinion. Amusingly, you seem to tacitly agree with that based on the examples of “problems” you’ve cited to, like extremely old operating systems, unavailability/high cost of RAM, and lack of SATA of all fricking things… you didn’t reference a single issue that would impact a computer less than ten years old (RAM) and your other two issues might affect a fifteen year old computer. Maybe. But probably more like twenty.

Unless it was a bargain basement Chromebook or the like, a five+ year old computer is likely still perfectly serviceable as a home pc after a free OS install or an inexpensive SSD upgrade. Now, is there something unique happening with their device? Certainly possible. Or could they have an ancient device? Sure. Had you asked how old it was, I likely wouldn’t have posted on this thread. But what you said was:
quote:

If its over four years old, thats about a $600 fix
quote:

But if its more than four or so years old, the cost outweighs a new machine

Which is utter nonsense to put forward as a categorical response to “my computer is slow”. Feel free to continue trying to defend that if you’d like, but I think even you realize you might have been just a bit off base on that.
