I spent a lot of summers in the mountains close to Clemson. Way too many Clemson fans around. But the proper pronunciation is Cliiiiiimpson.

I've mentioned that I taught at Clemson (88-92). This was during the end of the Danny Ford era. I was the faculty sponsor for the Letterman's Club. My goodness that was a colorful time. Your explanation of the pronunciation is spot on.
I taught a night class down at Newberry, dangerously close to Gamecock country. I required the class to meet once during the semester on campus. I was giving directions and one of the students said, "Just drive north. When you get close, roll down your windows and follow your nose." Clemsum
is the A&M University for South Carolina and had lots of bovine Agriculture.
