Switched about 3 years ago. I pay far less than I did with spectrum. It works for me and my family. Live on Northshore.

I don’t know a lot about technology so can someone please explain to me why a baseball game on tonight between the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers is on not one but two channels (TBS and TruTV) on my YouTube TV, and both channels say “This program is not available in your viewing area”?

I just want to watch baseball with my young son. The Astros are the closest team to us geographically. Why would we be locked out if it’s on a regular channel?

I’m sure I’ll get reeled for not knowing, but appreciate any insight.

It was blacked out because the game was broadcast by both TBS/TNT and Space City Home Network. Any game that is broadcast by SCHN is subject to normal blackout rules regardless of a simultaneous national broadcast.

This doesn't apply to the bigger national games like Apple on Friday nights, Fox on Saturdays or ESPN on Sundays because SCHN will not broadcast along side those.

Blackout rules are annoying and archaic but the regional channels pay teams a lot of money for exclusive TV rights so they do still exist. In this case the Astros actually own 50% of the network and it appears to be very fruitful for them financially.

The Astros are the only team that does not offer a blackout-free direct to consumer service and it has something to do with the network setup. LINK

Each year the rules change and get more relaxed. I think as these tv contracts start to age and expire the blackouts will be a thing of the past. Hopefully sooner rather than later.

Get yourself express vpn if you don’t want to have to deal with blackouts.
