Looks like Ramos has increased his range a few yards going into his Sr year.

From a Saturday practice report: LINK/

I know kickers are being pushed to limit right now getting live op reps for all of the offense and defensive position selection…so we may have a bit more in the tank.

Ramos was right at 50 last year, but 53 looks to be his range this year.

(From the article)
quote:

Special Teams

During one of the 11-on-11 team periods, the 1s and 2s worked on RedZone offense and play calling. During that time, Aeron Burrell and Damian Ramos worked on long-distance field goals, attempting kicks from 53 and 55 yards.

Ramos was 2-for-3 from 53 yards, with his lone miss hitting the crossbar.

Burrell went 1-for-4, connecting on a 55-yarder while missing twice to the right and once short. One of the right-side misses also fell short. The key takeaway was a mechanical issue, as his 55-yard make had the distance to clear from 65.

I love that Ramos’ miss still went straight. Thats good control when you range out and still hit a good ball. Happy to see him coming into form, we very much need the 40-53ish range he brings.

Pump the brakes on the longer ones, doesn’t even look like they let him try from 55. That may just come down to how tired they are right now.

I read where Ramos has increased his leg speed over the past year, but that Burrell’s leg speed was elite, NFL level.

I didn’t even know this was a metric.

It isn’t. It’s a datapoint on Trackman, but useless by itself. What trackman does provide is your variation in height and left to right. The best kickers bunch up their kicks and show very little variation. If you can do that and have high ball speed…great.

Said they both worked with Marucci to improve leg speed.

I would hope so…he had all offseason to build leg strength with weights and stretching and practicing. If all you’re doing is kicking and you have the resources and facilities at LSU you better have the leg strength to be good from 55-60.

Game pressure is the difference maker tho.

That’s very strange to me to treat Ramos and Burrell the same.

Who the frick is trying to increase Burrell’s leg speed? Dude can kickoff into the stands. He needs a kicking coach to work on his ‘mechanical issue’s (that have been talked about for years).

Looks to have worked for Ramos, happy with 3 more yards.

Needs to figure out his 40-49 range before he does his 50+ range. Career 70% at 40-49yd. Simply not good enough

While I agree with most of your post. Leg speed is important. Leg speed itself can add to the distance of the field goal. You can have a higher leg speed while still having little to no variation and still a bunched up kick. But what it does most importantly is raises the get off time of the kick allowing for less chance of kicks being blocked.

I remember TMac really diving in on this for get off time when I charted special teams for him.

2024 fg 45-49 Ramos was 8-11 at 72.7%

2024 NFL fg % for 45-49 yards - 76.9%

He’s not that far behind. If he made one more of those he would be at 81.89% and be well above the NFL average from that difference. It’s a razor thin margin.

Ramos will probably end this year as one of the best LSU kickers ever.

Could be #1 in multiple categories of the record book

That sounds cool. How’d he chart generally?

Kickers should be focusing on live op times for sure…but if you don’t have leg speed issues you shouldn’t be focusing on that.

We charted three. I got really good at working three stop watches at once velcroed on the back of a clipboard.

Snap to hold. Hold to kick. Total from snap to kick.

We fricking suck at recruiting kickers…hence us starting a walk-on who may have been a top 100 kicker in the country. This state has produced the best high school kicker in the country every year for the last 4 years and we didn’t get one, and yes I include my son in on that.
