I also appreciated the BJ Ryan shoutout. I hadn’t heard his name in a while. He was one of the best relievers in baseball 15-20 years ago.

116 or 118 according to a quick Google search.

ETA: Wikipedia says this:
quote:

This has happened 116 times in Major League history and has been accomplished by 107 pitchers (80 right-handed and 25 left-handed).

quote:

Six pitchers have accomplished the feat more than once: Hall of Famers Lefty Grove, Sandy Koufax, and Nolan Ryan, and active pitchers Chris Sale, Max Scherzer, and Kevin Gausman

Koufax is the only one in history to have an immaculate inning during the course of pitching a no hitter. THAT is being on top of your game. Damn.

Never been recorded because an immaculate inning is defined as 3 strikeouts on nine pitches. Whether or not one of those 9 strikes had contact made because a foul ball is a strike according to mlb statkeeping.

If a ball is put in play it isn't an immaculate inning...

There has, however been more 3-pitchinnings (206) than there have been immaculate innings.
