NFL players brains show major damage at early age
after reading this article, and several others like it, I'm being led to believe that people are discovering just how dangerous football actually is and possible changes have to be in store.
I'm wondering how major these changes will be. Obviously helmet technology has advanced considerably so the changes could be as minor as that. But if that doesn't correct a lot of the brain damage issues (which will certainly become more clear as technology and studies advance), will the game itself have to change?
Obviously head to head hits aren't policed enough as is, but will the fines/penalties for them have to become so outrageous as to eliminate them completely? Will you only be able to tackle by wrapping up the legs?
I can't think where the game would go, but I can assume that some changes will have to be in store. It's safe to say that a few major lawsuits, or a big class action one, may force this in the future.

There have been huge advancement in helmets even within the past 2 years or so. It's a mans game. All the guys know that running backs/lineman/etc lose all tissue between their knee joints. All quarterbacks het concussions/brain damage along with some receivers. It's just how the game is.

losing tissue in your knee joints is not on par with contemplating suicide because your brain is so messed up that it wants to kill itself.
The thought of having a four year career, only to turn into a warbling mess for the rest of it, is a pretty sobering thought. That's not to say that football will just be cancelled, but in what way will it adapt?
And again, a major headline grabbing lawsuit from hundreds of ex players could be just the thing that forces changes.

i don't really know what you do different to prevent the injuries. I think the most likely offshoot would be better continuous monitoring for brain injury.
FWIW, i think the better protective equipment has led to some of these problems. The NHL enforced the mandatory helmet rule anticipating that player head injuries (and concussions in particular) would decrease. in fact, they went up. the reasoning was that with better protective equipment, guys weren't afraid to throw their bodies around more and go for bigger hits.

maybe make helmet to helmet hits a 20 yd penalty and fine the aggressor a game check?
