Have always been a fan of the first 3 movies so was thinking of giving the books a try since I've heard they're quite different than the movies.
I had no idea there were 21 books in the series. Are they all worth reading?

There are only 3 books that were written by Ludlum, I'd just read those.
I haven't read any of the stuff written after Ludlum died so I can't comment on them, but the first three books tell a complete story and end the series well.

Did you find they were worth reading as a movie fan?

Books>>>>Movies
The Ludlum bought are much different than the movie series. Ludlum's Bourne is set during the 80s Cold War. If all you're looking for is car chase and fight scene special effects stick with the movies.

Yes the Cold War years, where absolutely nothing happened.
Ludlum is boring. And the author the family hired (to keep the train rolling) after his death is worse.

I haven't read any of the Ludlum ghostwriter books and I suspect you are right about those but you are sadly wrong about Ludlum. Some of his books were just OK but many were very good. Perhaps they didn't age well, I haven't reread any of them. Perhaps you're young and can't appreciate having lived through the cold war. Not sure which. Do you also find le Carre boring also?

Ludlum was an awesome writer. Very different from the movies though, more cold war thrillers with decent action than straight actioners. It's a very good trilogy, but may come across a bit dated (I haven't read any since the late 90s, but they were great then).
If are looking for books in the same vein that are a little more action oriented, I might suggest Jack Higgins or Alistair MacLean as old school spy/action novelists that are great too.

Jack Higgins always delivers.
