Any health insurance experts here? Need some advice.

I changed jobs in December and my new employer covers 100% of employee and spouse/dependent coverage so I put my wife, who is pregnant on my insurance.

My wife didn't submit the qualifying event paperwork in time, so she still has her own insurance (BCBS).

I checked with the coordinator at the OB office and she said since my plan (Aetna) has been paying as the primary, they will continue to do so and we don’t need to put the BCBS plan on it.

I thought that if there were 2 insurances there needed to be a COB and I couldn’t just choose which insurance would be the primary.

If I don’t submit both insurances, am I gonna get fricked by them both?

Essentially she is covered by both plans at the same time. The correct thing to do would be to have a COB, and Aetna will likely come back later this year and ask BCBS to process the claims.

You could end up having to pay out of pocket to meet the deductible on that plan. That could be an issue with figuring out how to apply payments on the provider side as they will likely have to change the funds to “undistributed.” They should apply those to the new co-payment/deductible, but sometimes they refund the patient and then you’ll essentially have to pay it back to them.

I would recommend using the birth as a life event to consolidate to one plan if only so you don’t have to pay two premiums at that point. Good luck!

So the BCBS plan is a HDHP and the Aetna plan has no deductible. So would I be on the hook for BCBS’s deductible when Aetna doesn’t have one?

And then basically on top of that, would Aetna fully cover the gaps in the BCBS coverage?

She has open enrollment effective July 1 but our due date is June 17. She’s quitting anyone so if I’m out of pocket her deductible Id just have her quit and forgo the ST Disability that’s about what that deductible is. I pay nothing and she pays like $27 so cost isn’t an issue with carrying both.

Unfortunately you would likely owe the deductible. There’s always a chance Aetna doesn’t catch it, but they should be running checks on their members for multiple coverages. I do think at some point you would owe a deductible to BCBS, though there’s a chance you slide through the cracks (happens with insurance more than you would think).

Aetna would continue to process the claims as secondary payor. They should cover gaps in coverage. For example if BCBS only covers 40% but Aetna covers 60%, Aetna would pay that extra 20%, but they wouldn’t cover the deductible of another plan.

You can switch her coverage effective 6/17 or whenever the baby is born without having to wait for that July 1 date (highly recommend to limit any potential deductible liability for the birth).

I guess I’ll just hope they don’t catch and if they do, just deal with it then. I just don’t want too long to go and BCBS fight about it and not want to pay and be stuck holding the full bag.

It’s just stupid that I have a plan without a deductible and still may end up having to pay a deductible for coverage I don’t even want or need.

I believe myself to be a generally intelligent person, but health insurance just something I have a hard time fully comprehending.

I’d be even more mad if I paid the premiums for Aetna myself because they are stupidly expensive.

I think that’s probably the best path. Remove the BCBS insurance once you can, just be prepared that BCBS might come back at some point.

It’s definitely not straightforward. If I didn’t deal with it every day, I’d be lost navigating some stuff. Hope it all works out for you, and congrats on the baby!
