Do any of the big box store wet and forget type cleaners work?
anyone with experience with this (or homemade cleaner) ?

That stuff works on mildew and some of the green staining stuff because it worked for me. I don’t know how it works for the thicker green moss though.

Roundup (glyphosate) will work fine for killing moss on your roof. Be careful though, as it will also kill plants planted around the drip line of your house.

When you have moss plants growing on your roof, you probably have areas that are chronically damp, possibly under limbs. The shingles are deteriorating. Check the sheathing in your attic for areas that show water stains and rotting wood.

Try spraying straight outdoor bleach on it. Pool bleach if you have it works even better.
