My wife has a current IRA at an old employer that doesn't offer a ton of options, it's currently sitting in a target date retirement fund.

I want to roll it over to Schwab where I have all of my stuff, and that would allow me to choose whatever allocation I choose.

I just want to put it in a 2 or 3 fund index portfolio as our retirement horizon is far off enough I don't feel the need to have the bond and other exposures that the target date fund has.

My question is, in this current down market, is it a good idea to make changes like that? In theory the target date fund is down less than say the SPY so selling "high" the target fund and buying SPY "low" makes sense. Just wondering if I'm missing anything.

If leaving there years, it won’t matter.

You're not in cash right now, so you're basically doing an even swap. You're selling your targets at a "low" and buying spy at a "low".

ETA: Time in the market > timing the market

Wish I was one of the lucky ones to do a roll over during the covid crash.

Was thinking the same, just curious if I may have been not thinking of something.

Thanks
