My father recently passed away and was an audiophile. I’m trying figure out all of these strange devices he has and this device specifically hooked up to the living room stereo system. From what I can tell the Geshelli Labs J2 Dac is a digital to analog converter. I have no clue what he used this for? Can someone help? Link

Heh. I had to look this up just to check myself because I'm used to using analog-to-digital converters to run my guitar through my computer/computer speakers.

Appears that a digital-to-analog converter works the opposite way, such as someone running a computer or smartphone audio signal through home stereo speakers.

I think you’re right. I discovered he was subscribing to Tidal Music which I believe has higher quality streaming?

Any digital source: CD, Transport, Streamer... has to be converted to analog, unless your device already has an internal DAC or you're feeding a fully digital amp/pre-amp/integrated amp (i.e. NAD). Usually, an external DAC will be of higher quality, so even if your CD or Streamer has a built-in DAC you may bypass that and use an external DAC.

Edit: Checked out the Gesheli Labs DAC and its basic, entry level DAC.. Same DAC chip as used in the WiiM Pro Plus.

Most digital devices these days as well as most preamps or receivers have DAC's in them. Audiophiles, love them some external DACS. They will buy a DAC and connect another DAC to it.

For the most part, if you have good equipment, a DAC is not necessarily needed. Its added to fine tune the sound.

I have a Eversolo A6 music streamer which also has a great built in DAC. Sounds amazing through my system. Joined a Eversolo Facebook group to learn the ins and outs of the device and guys there are replacing power supplies, adding external DACs, etc.

I dont know what other equipment you have but if your dad was a music twiddler (audiophile), you probably dont need it but use it if you have it
