Have any recommendations/suggestions? Looking to go the back end of July. Kid friendly activities have a 5 year.

GA is out. Head to pigeon forge and go up into the mountains from there.

Did a week in W NC last year and I was stunned. Really beautiful
Asheville just tries too hard if you get my meaning but we spent 4 or 5 days in and around Boone and it was awesome. Fun college town vibe.
NC State Parks are accessible and well run. Climbs and trails for every skill level. No problem taking the starch out of that 5 year old.
The biggest surprise was the wine scene. In the 60s and 70s NC brought over French and Italian vineyard types (they brought vines with them) and some of those folks bought land and started vineyards. Its not Sonoma but its pretty close at a fraction of the cost and better views.

With a 5 year old?
Well, drive time in the car. "Kid Friendly" activities are obvious factors.
I'd target Blue Ridge GA. Plenty of VRBO type rental cabins in the area.
We really liked this cabin.
You'd get:
Blue Ridge Scenic Train
Tubing On The Toccoa River (Water level dependent, but generally not a "fast" or "deep" river. Plenty of kids are on it).
Go to the Swan! Ever done a drive in movie these days??
Go spend the day and swim/picnic in Blue Ridge Lake. One of the best places to swim in Lake Blue Ridge is the Morganton Point Recreation Area.
You could also stay at Amicalola Falls State Park. Visit nearby Dahlonega. Really cool old town with lots of shopping and a few dining/beer type places. If not, at least go see the falls. Highest in Eastern US. Mayb 40 minutes from Blue Ridge.

Townsend to spend time in the GSM park, then day trip to Pigeon Forge or Gatlinburg for 5 year old activities.
Chattanooga would be a fun trip for kids also - Rock City, Ruby Falls, Incline Railway, aquarium, etc.

I'm taking my 7 and 5 year old grands to Chattanooga in March. Staying at a campground outside of town called Racoon Mountain Campground. Have camper spots, tents, and cabins. Never stayed there, but I work with a guy that has stayed. Then your mins away from the aquarium, Rock city, Ruby Falls and other attractions.
