We don't fly much so I'm pretty ignorant on how airline miles work.

Family recently booked flight direct with British Airways to Europe. We flew on British Airways there and it was an American Airlines flight on the way back.

Would that be eligible for American Airline Miles? Read they have a partnership, but can't get an answer out of American from their online "customer service".

Who did you book with? Both outbound and inbound through BA? And did you have a mileage account associated with the booking?

I don't fly American/BA, but would assume its the same as United and whichever company you book under is who you get the points with.

Some flights booked via United may be on smaller carriers like Mesa and it says "operated by Mesa" but you still get United points.

I'd assume their partnership is like Star Alliance and you can transfer/use points across all of their partners.

You can't transfer points from AA to BA or vice versa. However, you can book a flight on AA using the BA site and Avios and vice versa.

It's best to call in to do this transaction. Do you have mileage accounts wtih both airlines? If not, take 2 minutes and set up a BA Avios account online.

How long ago was this? If it's more than a few days, whatever miles you were going to get should have shown up in your account already. If you didn't get credit for the BA flight, call BA and ask them to credit it to your AA account quick fast. There is a statue of limitations for missing flight credits in most cases. I think I've only had to call once in 10+ years for United/*A, but I called them two days after the flight.
