Q1 PC Hardware Releases - Nvidia and AMD GPUs

Quite a few people were talking about new builds/PC purchases around the holidays, and hopefully after today we will have a bit more information and direction regarding PC gaming hardware, though much of it will still be up in the air until benchmarks come out in (presumably) a few weeks for near term releases.
Intel’s keynote: 10:30am CST
AMD: 1:00pm CST
Nvidia: 8:30pm CST

Looking like my 7900xtx purchase last week will be safe

Intel was essentially a flop, so I won’t even talk about it. AMD was a bit lighter than people expected. They announced the 9900x3D and 9950x3D to release in March. They also announced mobile x3D chips which is actually pretty interesting, but we’ll see what benchmarks look like. Bit surprising that, while they mentioned RDNA4 generally and the 9070 specifically, they didn’t give any detail beyond “Q1”. Most people were expecting a full announcement on that today, so no specs or other details caught people off guard.
We’ll see if Nvidia’s keynote tonight is interesting.

We’ll definitely know after tonight, but if the plan was to go AMD on a GPU, absolutely

The only way this AMD gen isn't an absolute disaster is if they essentially treat it like the RX 480 and 580 back in the day. Where it was great value for the performance.
If they are still trying to play this game where they price their corresponding cards $50-100 cheaper than the Nvidia alternative, then they will be seen as an absolute failure.

Yeah I was just worried that a new AMD card would come in at the same price and higher performance but doesn’t look like that’ll be the case.

Jensen is going on a hell of a fricking tangent about gaming/GPU history. He'd better be getting somewhere interesting soon.

Jensen is claiming the 5070 is going to have 4090 performance for $549. If he's not full of shite...
Posted on 1/6/25 at 9:03 pm to Joshjrn
5090 $1,999
5080 $999
5070ti $749
5070 $549

5080 $999
5070ti $749
5070 $549

Claimed 5090 as twice the performance of a 4090.
Only said the family was going to be released "starting in January", so nothing really new on that point. No news on which gets released when.

That’s just too good to be true, right? If true I’ll return this 7900xtx tomorrow.

The issue is that rumors are that the 5080 is coming out first, then the 5090, then the others sometime after. We don’t know exactly how that timeline will play out, and 3rd party reviews likely won’t come out until shortly before release. What’s the end of your return window?

If he isn’t bullshitting, I’m assuming it only reaches that level of performance due to some kind of enhanced frame generation.
Current frame gen is able to interpolate one frame for every rendered frame, but Jensen seems to claim that frame gen now can generate 3 frames per 1 real frame.
The amount of input lag with this frame generation would be very noticeable, unless they have a solution to somehow address this.

I’m holding off on speculating about performance, because we just don’t know yet. But something that jumped out at me was a return to 30 series pricing striation after the 40 series heavily inflated the 4080 to the point that it made zero sense compared to the 4090. Now the 5090 saw a significant $300 price increase while the 5080 saw a $200 price decrease. For context, the 3080 release for $699 in 2020 would cost $852 now adjusted for inflation. Still lower than the $999 of the 5080, but for context, the $1,199 RTX 4080 would be $1,292 now.

I could be wrong, but this is giving me 30 series vibes. Hopefully the benchmarks pan out and the scalpers don’t frick up everything. If the 5080 releases first, as had been rumored, and we manage at least 125% of the 4090, I’m going to have a hard time not pulling the trigger. If we can reach 150%+ of the 4090, I’m (attempting) buying day 1.

Going to be monitoring this pretty closely. That 5070 = 4090 performance statement is wild. Need to hear some context behind that.

They’re making this claim because the new version of nvidia frame generation can generate 3 additional frames instead of just 1 that current frame gen generates.
Raster to raster comparison 4090 would still win.
