IMO, he's the best cover corner in the league right now, and he's an UFA.

Will Al Davis hit him with the franchise tag?
Could we possibly go after him? Or will he be too expensive? Man, he'd look awesome in the black and gold.

Too bad we have so much $$$ tied up in Smith and Grant

Besides, Oakland has a history of overpaying corners. Woodson, Larry Brown, Buchanan, etc.

I like D. Robinson out of Houston.

well, then why can't we go after him? If we really are that far under the cap....

However, I'm no cap expert...there are probably complications for future years.

Pretty sure I read somewhere he was pissed the first time they stuck him with the tag this year and he wants out of Oakland. I think if the Saints want him, they can get him. They're not going to franchise someone who hates the organization.

He'll probably break the bank, doubt the Saints go for him, IMO. Especially since the Saints have to resign both Vilma/Evan and both will likely get huge contracts.

You can't tag someone twice

Unless there is a clause in the players contract or an agreement any player can be franchised twice. Remember Charles Woodson?

NFL sources indicated that Smith, who should be the league's executive of the year for turning a perennial doormat into a division champion, isn't averse to making Brees a franchise player a second straight year -- much as Seattle did with tackle Walter Jones and St. Louis did with tackle Orlando Pace. And don't ask me how that goes over with Brees.

The collective bargaining agreement in its present form gives clubs the right to use the franchise tag on a player more than once. With the July 15 deadline for franchise-tagged players to sign their tender offers fast approaching, some of these disgruntled players may suggest they will sign the franchise tender if the club promises not to use the tag again next year.

We need a safety (or two) about 10 times more than we need another CB.

The only way that changes at all is if McKenzie really is to be moved to Safety, but that's just speculation at this point.

Doesn't that upgrade both the CB and Safety spot? I'd say go for it. I might even do it if you signed D. Robinson as Robinson and MM are about equal imo and MM would upgrade the other spot. Besides those two, I would say keep MM at CB.

wow, I disagree there.

Indeed, we do need a safety as well, but any time you have an opportunity to get the top player in the league at a position of glaring need, you should go for it. Especially since the Saints are SO close to being something special.

I'm not ready to depend on injury prone guys like Mackenzie again next year.

We didn't depent on Mike McKenzie last year. When he was back it was great, but our CB's were fine even without him AND Tracy Porter.

Gay and David were fine - we had some of our best defensive games of the year with them as starters (GB, ATL, @ Det, @ TB, @ Chi). If one of them went down, THAT'S when we'd have been screwed.

But next year if our CB's are McKenzie, Porter, Gay, David, Young - I'd argue that we're more set there than any other position except for QB, TE, and DE.

It would be retarded to throw $10MM per year at one of our deepest positions when we obviously need safety, OLB, and RB help.
