Dawson County is the birthplace of stock car racing. North GA moonshiners smuggling down into Atlanta on what is today GA 400 but was a rural two lane. JAcked up their cars so the weight of all the shine in the back wouldn't make it obvious they were carrying any heavy load. And "souped up" all their engines so they could outrun the standard cop car. There's a documentary about it.
