Any lifters deal with carpal and/or cubital tunnel syndrome?

i was a baseball pitcher till college and have lifted 3-5 days a week since HS. Im 44 and for 20 years i have cramping and pain in my wrists and the tops of my hands where it hurts to type or write.

I tested positive for moderate carpal and cubital in both arms a decade ago, but it hurts worse int he right because I'm right-handed. Had cubital done and it didn't help.

Now I'm in Dallas and went to the top-rated hand surgeon and he does a very small procedure and says he can do the carpal and cubital in one surgery plus cut the Guyon's canal.

i don't have the true symptoms of carpal- i don't go numb and get occasional tingling but mostly in pinky and ring. I've met my deductible so curious what the downside would be but i also am scared it won't help.

Working out is my favorite thing so I don't want to give that up. Ive tried a sleeping brace and everything but nothing has worked.

I’ve got a tennis elbow sleeve with a strap that goes around your forearm. I’ve found that that has helped while working out.

If you’re doing heavy deadlifts you can maybe get some relief using weight lifting hooks.

Cubital tunnel and tennis elbow totally different things. A tennis elbow brace will probably do him more harm since it would be compressing the nerve even more.

Try to avoid all weight bearing on right elbow including while driving sitting at desk also try to limit the amount of time your elbow is held in a flexed position

I had the guyon's canal done as well and it helped. The main culprit of everything was Thoracic Outlet Syndrome though. Hopefully that's not the case with you. I would do the guyon's canal release done again though.

I was wondering about that can you please tell me your symptoms when you had the guyon release?

Did they also release the carpal?

All my nerve pain is below my elbow. It’s very sensitive. I’m wondering if we don’t do anything to the elbow and just do the release at the hand will it help?

So my symptoms were mostly the deep nerve pain. My hand was getting increasingly weaker and the coordination wasn't good. My ring and pinky fingers also began to curl up.

I thankfully never had carpal at all so they left that alone.

The nerve pain was unbearable. I actually had the guyon's done at the same time as a revision of the cubital transposition at the elbow. So I couldn't really say how doing just the guyon's would've helped

so thats what im debating is doing the revision on the elbow. I was young and googled the first guy that came up and he was an orthopedic that was a dumb arse.

this time ive done research and this guy in Dallas is one of the best so im wondering if its worth it. I love working out and i know if i do the elbow the recovery will be much longer

did it help doing it a second time? What did they do different?

It was definitely worth doing it the second time! The first one they moved the nerve subcutaneously and after about a year my brother's bulldog pulled my arm super hard and it came back out. The second time they put the nerve under the muscle which made it much more secure. After that and the guyon's canal I've always had normal nerve conduction tests so they definitely worked. I think if you've got a fantastic doctor and it's really bothering you still I think it's worth going for it. Yes the recovery is a little longer, but to be out of pain it's so worth it.

Yes, in fact, I had to have my ulnar nerve moved to the front of my elbow and they had to cut into my wrist to fix things. Overall, I’ve been pleased with the results. I now need the same done to my left arm. The irony is that we lift to stay healthy.
