Captain Obvious here. We all saw what the defense looked like last year. Bad coaching and average players all over the field. The difference between last year and this year is remarkable. We still don’t have 4 and 5 stars all over the field but they are being coached up and doing much better not beating themselves with numerous busted coverages and missed tackles. This team might lose 1 or more games in the upcoming weeks but losing is easier to deal with if you simply got beat. We all hate losing when your team underperforms because they looked clueless. I am proud of the team win or lose when they play hard and execute. Big hat tip to coaches who are teaching this group how to put themselves in position to win. That’s all we as fans can ask for.

Some of y'all really try and act like we're Baylor or something.

LSU always has elite athletes. Always.

Agree LSU has good athletes but to say the talent level on this year’s defense is “elite” is wrong. The coaches are more elite right now.

This is just not true. Typically, I’d agree, but we have been so depleted in the lb corps and secondary since 2020.

This is not a talented defense. They are starting to develop, but the top end talent still isn’t there.

Well said Bloodworth.

Of recent, 2010-2012, 2016, 2019 D's had elite talent. Ask yourself, how many players on this year's D would be in rotation on the '11 team? I think Weeks and Swinson are close, maybe Savion, but that's about it.

So you are saying Whit Weeks is not that talented?

Making plays all over the field but he’s not that good since our LBs are still depleted. Got it.

LSU drafted players 2024
1 2 Jayden Daniels, QB Washington
1 6 Malik Nabers, WR N.Y. Giants
1 23 Brian Thomas Jr., WR Jacksonville
2 48 Maason Smith, DT Jacksonville
4 116 Jordan Jefferson, DT Jacksonville
6 189 Mekhi Wingo, DT Detroit

Coaching is definitely better on the defense side. Did our D-line look like it had 3 guys who could go pro last year? Under performed due to basically no D line coach last year, and now we have Bo Davis

Remember when Brad Davis was head coach for a game? He got so much out of a 30-man roster.

We don’t currently have them stacked across the defense. We have a few in guys like Swinson, Womack, Weeks, and Alexander. We have some freshmen like Breaux, Reliford, Spears and Woodland who look like they can grow into that. But we are also incredibly thin at DT and LB and the depth at CB and S isn’t really as good as we need it to be. We just lost a lot more on side of the ball after the coaching transition and the heavy use of the portal to patch holes has created constant turnover.

Even though they aren’t the most talented players on this defense, I do appreciate guys like Penn, Ryan and Burns who have really improved and are just doing their jobs out there now. That’s what we need.

We do have a lot more elite talent and depth on offense. And we have EXPERIENCED impact talent there, which is also something we lack on defense.

Alexander. He’s a prototypical Raymond CB. He’s lean, has height and length and good cover skills. He wouldn’t have started, but he could have gotten on the field.

Misey, you're probably correct. Zy wouldn't have started over Mo or Tyrann at CB but he may well be better than Tharold. Close.
