Looking for recommendations for a possible trip to New Mexico over the Christmas break. We were planning on North Carolina, but the flooding seems to have impacted enough of the area to make us have to change destinations.

The kids want to see snow and tube down slopes. My wife has been to Red River, NM as a teen, but we aren’t sure of what areas are worth visiting. Really just need a nice place to lounge with some type of outdoor activity.

Go back to RR!

We've been going for years and love it. The city has built up a little over the last few, new places to eat and stay, but it hasn't lost the small town feel or gotten pretentious like some other places.

If y'all aren't huge skiers and you're just looking for a place to visit some winter weather (that's my family), then RR will allow you to do all of the things you mentioned (see snow & tube), as well as snowmobiling, ATV tours, etc.

Red River is a really fun ski town where you basically have lifts at the end of streets in town. Mountain is obviously not huge, but it's a great little town. Angelfire is a good mountain, but there is much less to do than in RR as far as nightlife and such. We had a great time at RR letting the kids hang at the house while we went out a a band at a bar each night.

One thing I can't recommend highly enough is the farolito walk on Christmas Eve in Santa Fe. We did it last year, and it was probably one of the most magical experiences for Christmas Eve that we've had as a family. As you wander through the canyon road neighborhoods where the farolitos are lit, people have neighborhood bonfires that you stop at for libations and caroling. Spontaneous caroling just breaks out for a few songs at a bonfire, thne people wander along until you find another fire that looks appealing and more caroling will break out. It's a beautiful testament to community. That being said: it's also VERY popular destination for Christmas, so restaurants and such are packed.
