This is a look at the 2009 depth chart through my eyes. I know I will get blasted for some of comments I will post, but this is an honest look at the 2009 LSU team - trying to be as unbiased as possible. OL, QB, and DL are LSU's largest areas for concern in my honest opinion and that does not sit well for a team coming off a 5 loss season. 2008 was a season that we beat only 2 major conference teams with winning records. (South Carolina & Georgia Tech)- I don't know about you, but that is scary to me... Here is my look - I left out people that I do not expect to contribute too much... Only Freshmen that I feel will fill an immediate need are listed. Let the comments start rolling... lol

QB
No. 9 Jordan Jefferson, 6'4", 210, SO
No. 12 Jarrett Lee, 6'3", 210, SO
Russell Shepard
Chris Garrett

-LSU has a lot of growing up to do- Jordan Jefferson played ok against GT, but there is a lot to be desired with his passing skills. JL has no confidence and RS is going to be a true freshman - I feel he will be good in spots, but not ready for prime time on a full time basis. Garrett should be redshirted.

RB
No. 32 Charles Scott, 5'11", 223, SR
No. 5 Keiland Williams, 5'11", 223, SR
No. 26 Richard Murphy, 6'1", 198, JR
No. 8 Trindon Holliday, 5'5", 159, SR
Michael Ford
Dexter Pratt

-RB is ok as long as CS stays (no reason to think he won't, but I'm sure there is a chance) - Keiland runs too timid and doesn't always hit the hole with a lot of vigor - Richard Murphy dances too much and needs to run more north/south like CS - Ford and Pratt are coming in with rave reviews, but both should be "redshirted" if Scott comes back. Of course there is still Holiday.

FB
No. 34 Stevan Ridley 6’0”, 215, SO
Dominque Allen

-Concern here- Ridley has been a serviceable ball carrier in mop up duty, but I didn't see him block much, so hopefully Allen can come in as a true freshman and be able to block like a champ. It would be great to have a good receiver in this position too (maybe Tyler Edwards as he was seen practicing in this position during the season).

TE
No. 18 Richard Dickson, 6'3", 245, SR
No. 83 Mitch Joseph, 6'5", 245, SO
No. 85 Alex Russian, 6'5", 230, SO
No. 46 Tyler Edwards, 6’3”, 240, RSFR
No. 82 Matt Branch, 6'7", 240, RSFR

-Dickson has been great - A lot of youth working their way in (mostly as blockers)

C
No. 53 T-Bob Hebert, 6'3", 260, SO

-A concern here- T-Bob coming off of a knee injury and no one with any game experience as the top two Centers from 2008 are graduating - Lyle Hitt is the right size, but who takes over at RG if he moves over?

RG
No. 62 Lyle Hitt,, 6'2", 284, SR
No. 64 P. J. Lonergan, 6'4", 290, RSFR

-Hitt has been good, but backups will be very young, and who will take over if Hitt moves over?

LG
No. 60 Will Blackwell, 6'4", 295, SO
No. 51 Clay Spencer, 6'6", 285, RSFR
No. 72 Alex Hurst, 6'5", 290, RSFR

-Big Herm is gone and will leave a gaping hole at LG- someone will have to step up.

LT
No. 70 Ciron Black, 6'5", 315, JR????
No. 77 Earnest McCoy, 6'5", 335, SO
No. 75 Greg Shaw, 6'5", 285, RSFR

-Black may have played his last game at LSU and he will be missed as much as Herman Johnson... Two huge holes to fill on the left side.

RT
No. 78 Joseph Barksdale, 6'6", 315, JR
No. 68 Josh Dworaczyk, 6'6", 270, SO

-Barksdale is solid especially after a year of OJT.

WR
No. 80 Terrance Toliver, 6'5", 180, JR
No. 87 Jared Mitchell, 6'0", 192, SR
No. 19 Deangelo Peterson, 6’3 190, RSFR
No. 10 Ricky Dixon, 6’2”, 216, JR

-Toliver was underutilized for most of the season and I think he was our second best receiving threat behind Lafell - A lot of depth here

SE
No. 1 Brandon Lafell, 6'3", 180, SR
No. 86 Chris Mitchell, 6'0", 176, SR
No. 28 R.J. Jackson, 6'2", 208, SR
No. 31 John Williams, 5'10", 190, SO
No. 21 Chris Tolliver, 6'1", 190, RSFR

-Lafell is an NFL receiver waiting for his chance. John Williams will surprise a lot of people.

Defense

LE
No. 98 Sidell Corley, 6'4", 275, SO
No. 88 Chase Clement, 6’6”, 245, RSFR
No. 89 Lavar Edwards, 6’4”, 280, RSFR

-Very little experience, but loads of talent.

RE
No. 84 Rahim Alem, 6'3", 252, SR
No. 81 Chancey Aghayere, 6’4”, 243, RSFR

-Alem came on this year (finally) - Talent everywhere, but no experience behind Alem.

LT
No. 97 Al Woods, 6'5", 325, SR
No. 95 Pep Levingston, 6’4”, 269, JR
No. 78 Kentravis Aubrey, 6'3", 285, SO
Chris Davenport

-Woods needs to live up to his billing - Levingston has looked good from what I've seen and looks heavier than listed here.

RT
No. 90 Ricky Jean Francois, 6'3", 281, JR ???
No. 92 Drake Nevis, 6'1", 285, JR
No. 71 Cordian Hagans, 6’5”, 290, RSFR
Akiem Hicks

-Francois is supposed to be gone (NFL), but Drake has played well when given the chance and Hagans comes in with a lot of positive reviews. Hicks should provide depth.

Buck (OLB)
No. 56 Perry Riley 6'1", 225, SR
No. 22 Ryan Baker, 6’0”, 210, SO
No. 17 Shomari Clemons 6’2”, 215, SO

-Riley was my pick for breakout player in 2008 and I still haven't given up on him - Baker has been awesome on special teams and looks to get more playing time with the defense.

Mike (MLB)
No. 54 Jacob Cutrera, 6'4", 225, SR
No. 57 Kyle Prater, 6'1", 207, RSFR

-I lost confidence in Cutrera after the 2007 Arkansas game, but he looked better in 2008 - LSU needs a 240 lb run stuffer... but I don't see one on the roster.

Will (OLB)
No. 11 Kelvin Sheppard, 6'3", 228, JR
No. 55 Kellen Theriot 6'1", 228, RSFR

-Sheppard is solid and will get better-

LCB
No. 07 Patrick Peterson , 6'1", 175, SO
No. 04 Jai Eugene, 6'0", 175, JR
No. 35 Ryan ST Julien, 6'1", 170, RSFR
No. 36 Derrick Bryant, 6'0", 185, RSFR

-A lot of talent - a better pass rush will make these guys look a lot better in 2009. Eugene was a bit of a disappointment... I thought he was going to be great in 2008, but was beat out by a Freshman (POY in high school, but still a freshman)

RCB
No. 29 Chris Hawkins, 6'1", 181, SR
No. 25 Phelon Jones, 5'11", 195, SO
No. 13 Ron Brooks , 5'10", 180, SO
No. 15 Brandon Taylor, 6'0", 178, RSFR

-Hawkins was the best corner in 2008 and there is an abundance of talent behind him.

SS
No. 03 Chad Jones, 6'3", 222, JR
No. 44 Danny McCray, 6'1", 205, SR
No. 37 Karnall Hatcher, SS , 6'2", 190, RSFR
Craig Loston

-Danny McCray gave me ulcers while I watched him cover people and I think LSU has plenty of people that should play ahead of him - Chad Jones is the man!!!

FS
No. 24 Harry Coleman, 6'2", 202, SR
No. 23 Steffon Francois, 6'1", 207, SO

-Coleman was solid and Francois should help out.

Special Teams

PR

No. 08 Trindon Holliday, 5'5", 159, SR
No. 09 Chad Jones, 6'3", 222, JR
No. 31 John Williams, 5'11", 175, SO

-Holiday is hit and miss, Jones is solid - Can't wait to see John Williams with the ball in open space.

KRE
No. 08 Trindon Holliday, 5'5", 159, SR
No. 5 Keiland Williams, 5'11", 223, SR
No. 31 John Williams, 5'11", 175, SO

-Keiland Williams should be better at returning kicks then he is in my opinion, too timid just like running the ball from the RB position.

Kicker
No. 30 Josh Jasper, 5'11", 165, JR
No. 39 Andrew Crutchfield, 5'11", 190, JR

-David will be missed- Hopefully one of these guys can fill in and get the job done.

Punter
No. 30 Josh Jasper, 5'11", 165, JR
Derek Helton

Nice job. Here are a few thoughts:

I think Black is gone. If so, Barksdale moves to LT and McCoy becomes your RT. Dworacyzk moves into LG and Hitt stays at RG.

WRs - I think LaFell should leave. His stock is pretty high right now and a lot could happen next year. If he goes, your top three are Tolliver, J. Mitch, and D. Peterson (by the way he'll be a SO not a RSFR), with C. Mitch as a fourth. Also, look out for Ron Brooks to maybe make a move to offense.

DL - RJF is gone! Also, Alexander is attempting to get 6th year, and it is very possible. Hicks may move to DE.

Safetys - McCray (FS) and Coleman (SS) to start with Jones covering the nickel.

Special Teams - Helton will be your punter. And Ron Brooks will join Holiday on KR.

I think we should start using CBs as our nickle back.

Why not?

With a new defensive coach, its possible. It would definitely be better to move Riley to MLB and have Baker start at OLB than having Cutrera start.

i think Cutrera, Riley and Shep are entrenched there...but i guess you never know with a new coach.

I am pretty sure that Riley and Shepperd were recruited to Tenn out of HS though

I hope not. Having both Cutrera and Riley starting would not be good. I could handle one of them starting, not both.

one on the strong side, one in the middle. I dont see the problem

Baker is still too light, IMO

I think RIley belongs in the middle though.

Baker was ~215 to start the season. He has probably gained a few pounds since then and will gain more in the offseason. Its not like we want him that big though. We need the smaller LBs.

he has tremendous upside, but i still think he needs 1 more year in the weight room.

we'll see. He'll def be 2nd string, so he'll play regardless
