U joints and pinion seals.

I’ve had a rear differential pinion seal leak three times in the last 5-6 years and 150k miles. First time was obviously because rearmost u joint was completely destroyed. Lucky I didn’t lose the prop. Last two times everything else seems fine.
Anything I should check or look out for? I can’t feel any play but it’s a heavy truck so maybe I just can’t shake it hard enough. Am I installing incorrectly?
Truck is 2003 Ram HD 423,xxx miles. 2WD.

Same issue on a 04.5, 2wd 2500 Ram.
Pulled the pinion, cleaned everything up, set everything back up and never an issue after that.

Would it be correct to say that monster torque spec would only be most critical when pressing in new bearings and less important when just replacing the seal?
I can weld up a yoke adapter to dial it in but that seems like overkill for an otherwise simple job.

Yes and no, depends on who you talk to.
Mine only quit seeping after a tear down. Now was that because dumb luck, cleaning everything, or because I cared more to get the right TQ on it who knows. Before I would mark the threads and just TQ it until I got back to the mark.
Yes it was a pain, but I have an unreasonable hatred for anything leaking.

Check the vent line to make sure it is not plugged.
Check the Yoke for a groove where the seal rides.
Not sure on that particular yoke but, some have a replaceable dust cover that presses on to keep sand/dirt out.

Shows how much I know about truck axles. Turns out the line is there but the vent is gone. Time to do some cleaning. H&G board comes through again.

I had a 2006 ram 2500 and think i did the rear pinion once or twice in 140k miles. I think its just a known weak point and fairly common issue. It barely seeped enough on mine to cause dark spots on the front of the housing. It never lost any measurable amount of oil.
The vent may make a difference though and I hope it does for you.
