What DC out there available gets you excited?

Please give us your short list

This is acknowledging that my opinion is not worth a crap, but answering your question:

I like assistants with ambition who are looking to excel, not maintain a job. I liked Walker (young, firey guy with attacking defense and NFL experience looking to move forward), Vic Koenning (another young firey guy who has excelled at multiple programs) and George Walker (NFL experience and the guys he worked with/for are amazing). I liked Greg Robinson to a lesser extent but he does have a ton of NFL experience as well as head coaching experience(although it wasn't successful head coaching experience).

This is opposed to Chavis who has no NFL experience, plays soft coverage a lot, has been in one place for a very long time and all the SEC coaches have seen his tricks and style of D.

This of course is IMHO & FWIW which isn't much.

Again, Chavis is better than what we had, but I'm just not excited over the hire is all.

SunTiger, you rattled off two candidates that took other jobs..

I said "available" DC candidates

So you can be critical of this hire, you have that right, but that ambition you speak of is why Vic and Walker accepted other gigs

These are the facts

I liked those hires are well

They were considered, but in the end, they took other jobs for future/personal/goals/ambitions reasons... Nothing against Miles or LSU..

If you watched many of the big point games from the last few years at Tennessee, you'd notice that their lack of depth on defense, special teams and offense were a major part of the problem. The defensive coaching was NOT the problem. I have a lot of well informed and knowledgeable family in the Knoxville area that are unfortunately UT fans, and they ALL wanted to see Chavis retained...

Walker is 49 years old.

Vic Koenning (another young firey guy who has excelled at multiple programs)

Vic runs a very similar defense to Chavis. Fans at Clemson also think he plays way too soft on 3rd and long (both UT and Clemson fans are wrong, as are all fans who bitch btw).

George Walker (NFL experience and the guys he worked with/for are amazing).

Never been a college DC, it's a risk...besides, his name is George Edwards.

Greg Robinson

Wow...he is so far over the hill it's not funny. How can you be a defensive coach at a D1 school and rank in triple digits multiple years (his last two, not his first years...his kids, his philosopy)?

Now on to some real opinions about Chavis:
quote:

“He loves to blitz and play man-to-man defense,” said former Tennessee linebacker Eric Westmoreland, who was on the Volunteers’ 1998 national championship team and on the 2000 team that set the school record with 50 quarterback sacks.

“Coach Chavis never lets an offense dictate how the game’s going to be played to his defense,” Westmoreland said Monday. “If he has cornerbacks who can play man, he’s going to play man and blitz and pressure the quarterback from different places. That’s his trademark. He'll bring cornerbacks, safeties, linebackers. We all got sacks.”

quote:

“His No. 1 deal is if you’re going to try to sit back there and throw 25 or 30 times a game, your quarterback is going to get hit early and often,” former Tennessee quarterback Casey Clausen said Monday. “He’ll bring a whole lot of emotion and physical style to practice and into the games. He loves to get after the quarterback. I think he would be a great fit at LSU.”
