Not a political post.

Has anyone here ever worked on Wall Street or in Mid-town (new financial district in NYC)? How was it? Did it ever seem overwhelming?

I’ve been to NYC twice this year (first time ever in May) and am completing a Masters in Finance at a school in Texas. I saw BlackRock, Goldman Sachs and I know there are many hedge funds (e.g., Bill Ackman’s Pershing Square). It made me curious.

My only professional background is 18 months in Public Accounring (non Big 4). I am CPA-eligible but want to earn both that and the CFA.

Appreciate all input. Thanks!

Best advice: network with your alumni that work on Wall Street (LinkedIn is a powerful tool). You won’t get jobs from online applications / job postings. Networking gets your resume to the top of stack for interviews. With an accounting background / MFIN, you are certainly qualified for consulting / IB roles.

It's not fun, but if you have a strong work ethic, you'll be fine, and you can make a lot of money.

Just don't spend the rest of your life there

Have an escape plan.

It seems like working anywhere in Manhattan is, "oh, it's been dark for four hours? Is that the last train to Queens?"

I think NYC perpetuates this kind of activity because most of the places they live are shitty (small, cramped, hard to cook, etc., yes, I know nobody has as much space as the US does, but you can't move from Kansas City to NYC and not be shocked,) compared to where you'd live nearly anywhere else. They don't really want to go home, like Tokyo.

I was big 4 too, but I never did the SOX set of coke/strip clubs, etc. like everyone else seemed to. Make the bag, but have a goal, and don't get trapped in the NYC metro area for longer than necessary (that includes NJ, CT.)

I worked in the financial district at a small consulting firm and a Big 4 firm.

Not exactly finance but very long hours with very smart people. Several co workers went on to Ivy MBA’s and are killing it. I didn’t feel the need to slave for years so I jumped at the first tech opportunity; I have some regrets but it worked out for me.

It’s not too too overwhelming if you know what you’re getting yourself into. There’s a lot of information out there about what to expect as far as workload and culture.

Yes, I worked at 40 Wall (Trump’s building) while living in midtown. The commute is longer than you might think and the 4 train is your friend.

If you are a straight male you’ll be surrounded by beautiful women.

Manhattan is expensive but is a great experience, I had a friend that advised me to live there and in no other borough.

I’m older now but wouldn’t trade that experience for anything. Just a good ole boy never meaning no harm from Georgia. Was educational for me in so many ways. We were investment bankers.
