Can I re-use wall mount light and fan speed switch with a much newer ceiling fan?

Our 24yr old ceiling fan sparked, smoked and quit working last night.

Lights still work.

The light control and fan controls are wall mounted in a double switch plate - light on/off on one side and the fan sliding speed control on the other.

Can this be re-used with a new 3 speed fan that is able to be controlled via wired wall controls? A new wall controller is available with the new fan but would only use 1/2 of the current double switch plate.

My dad and I replaced his bedroom ceiling fan. It should have a setup page in the instructions on wiring for separate controls for light and fan.

If lights still work it's probably just something in the fan controls that burnt out. New fan will work no problem. If you like your bulbs, consider getting a non-LED fan. A lot of them now are LEDs with custom white light settings (warm white, soft white, bright white) but look like traditional light bulb colors.

I have been through this myself. My home is older and wired for ceiling fan control from wall mounted switches. One for lights and one for the fan speed. Recently I decided I wanted a larger fan in the family room, and I allowed my daughter to talk me into a state of the art 72 inch ceiling fan with all the bells and whistles. It was a DC powered fan with LED lights that had more color selections, hues, warm, cold, hot BS you could imagine. When it arrived and I took inventory of the fan I realized right off the bat that the unit only had two wires for Hot and Neutral, and a bare ground. That is all you can hook up, all the control is internal and you have to use the battery operated remote to turn the fan on, set the speed, and control the lights. You don't even really need a wall switch, but use one for safety as it will be the master power switch. The other switch becomes useless. I didn't like this concept so I sent it back and got a traditional ceiling fan with wiring for wall switches. If you want to make one of these fans more "state of the art" you can install a smart dimmer for the lights, and a smart fan speed switch. After that just decide what kind of LED light bulbs you want. You can even use smart bulbs if you want color changing ability. For the smart switches I went with TP-Link for the dimmer, and TreatLife for the fan speed control. It works well, and I have done the same install in every room that has a ceiling fan.

ETA: The switches and bulbs work very well with Alexa and Google, if you want to go that route.

Any sliding SCR switch should work with any dumb AC 3 speed fan if wired correctly.
That being said, putting an SCR in a wall isn’t something I’d be 100% comfortable with in my own house. One in a million anything really bad happens but it just creeps me out a little. I’m probably just weird.

We are keeping it simple.

The fan with light kit we are considering has no dimming or color changing, just uses 2 LED bulbs (A19).

No remote control. No Alexa or Google.

We like the wall controls we have and hope to continue to use them. If we have to use the recommended combined control from the mfr, we will just use a new wall plate with a blank on one side.
