I just graduated from college and not really sure exactly how it works. Is donations to a athletic department(TAF) refundable or just to the educational institution?

You should be able to write TAF off -- if you itemize.

If you start writing expenses and donations off, then you loose your standard deduction which is around $5800 or so. (i forget the exact number)
So, your itemized deductions and donations need to total more than the standard deduction, or you will not be better off.

You could probably deduct the donations, but are they more than $6k?
