I have been twice and was perplexed as to why they don't clean the graffiti. Everything else is absolutely fantastic.
If you get a block or two from any of the tourist areas, in the main cities, it is terrible.
Just watched a walking tour of Palermo in Sicily and it looks even worse.
Seems that with tourism as the driver of the economy they would have crews removing this on a daily basis.

This was the only negative I had during both trips, except for getting lost a couple of times driving, without being able to read most of the street signs.

I saw this in Rome more prevalently than in Florence. Florence was actually very well kept up and minimal graffiti

That is true, smaller the town the less graffiti is what I noticed.
Isle of Capri had none. Demographics I guess.

It's every major city in Europe (other than Vienna). Naples is probably the worst I've seen but Paris and Berlin (where is seems to be celebrated) are pretty close behind. It's just something you have to ignore there

Unfortunately, the memories of the graffiti in Rome stand out to me as much as the Colesium, Pantheon or Trevi do. It would be one thing if it was quality art, but it's all shitty tagging.

Rome and Athens are the two worst I’ve seen. I don’t remember it being overly present in Paris.

My first trip overseas was to Rome and I was blown away at how much graffiti was on everything.
