How far out do you usually book lodging and air for ski trips?

I was checking to see when is the best time to book lodging and air for ski trips. We are going somewhere in Colorado but wanted to see how far out do you usually book to get the best pricing. I already bought my EPIC passes to save on those.

About five days before wherever storm is hammering the most snow.

Rode 27 days this season, in the US and Canada, no trip was booked over a month in advance.

Revelstoke BC was the toughest to book. Limited places to stay on short notice.

SLC easiest.

There is absolutely no way that offers the best pricing.

The best time to book is when you'll have the most options so basically, when you have the money to make the initial payment and have shopped numerous rentals / options, that's the best time. You can save some money by booking something without a cancellation policy but I don't think that risk is worth the money it saves.

Generally, you can find short term rentals through VRBO and AirBNB for a better price than what the resorts will offer with your epic discount.

We booked our Mardi Gras trip 2 weeks got thru VRBO. Free cancellation until February 1st. Was a great deal we couldn’t pass up.

Colorado will make Revy look like SLC. Those mountains require some planning if you want certain amenities like ski in/out for the right price. You really only get great deals last minute if it is early or late in the season, prime season you will be fighting over the scraps.

I was looking at some resorts in Europe and it was much cheaper than Colorado. I know cost to get there will be more but I’m gonna do some more research

This will be my first full Epic pass year so I planned my first solo trip in December. Going to TRY to work 1/2 day each day and hit the slopes from like 11 on. Will see how long that lasts

We found a place on 4 o’clock road in Breck. Lower 4 o’clock run is literally steps out the back door which is going to be great for us with some moms not skiing and kids doing it for the first time. Moms can watch the kids do that run off snowflake lift which is a short walk away. Also will give the moms great location to walk to Main Street. Breck is not my favorite and I’m prepared for the crowds but it was the only option when you have to take school aged kids.

I am looking to Breck for next spring (april)

Would be my first time so any suggestions for a solo trip (intermediate skier) would be appreciated

I've stayed at that place. It is super convenient to get on and off the mountain. If I remember right, it's pretty flat at the end, so make sure you have some speed.

TO OP:

I fly Southwest (free bags really come in handy in the winter), so I start looking about 3-4 months out, waiting for a great sale. Usually can get Colorado under $200 or Utah under $250. Hotels about the same timeframe, but if it's busy season, book something refundable as early as you know which mountain you want to go to. Then you have plenty of time to see if a better deal comes along.

Stay in Frisco if you'll have a rental car. Cheaper places to stay, plenty to eat and drink in that area. Then you can drive 15 mins to Breck or Keystone if you want to change it up one day. I would recommend the 45 minute drive to Vail as well.

All of this can be done without a car too. You are just at the mercy of the bus schedule.

Yeah, I don't want a car if possible. I'd rather just stay on the bus line or walkable to a lift.

Gotcha. Since you are looking in April, might be better off waiting for an end of season deal. Check through the epic site in March or so. We got a great one in Vail one year.

If you don’t stay in one of the resort towns, be prepared for the local workers to cut in front of you in the bus line in the morning. I stayed in Avon a couple years ago and trying to get to Vail was a little challenging. They don’t care about you getting to the lifts. Afternoon wasn’t bad just the mornings.

It's definitely going to be something in Colorado flying into Denver. Likely a shuttle over then just want easy access to / from the lifts and stores and such. I mostly stay in and cook dinner on my own, not too much for nightlife but a cool chill spot to grab a beer wouldn't hurt.
