their farmland has gone to shite in the last 30yrs, the over planting of the same crops and not taking care of the soil has killed the dirt in Cuba. My brother in law has gone to Cuba 5-6 times in the last few years doing out reach with the Methodist Church. Last trip he stayed on a farm for a few days and they talked about the condition of the soil.

My grandfather ran a refinery in Cuba before Castro. He said the weather is so warm they plant and harvest in 6 months. So, you can do 2 crops in 12 months. The soil was carefully maintained. But in those days everyone above manual labor level was an American or European who were hired because they knew what they were doing.
