I’m curious about this. If another company offered you nearly double if you came to work for them, then once you got there said we actually are not able to pay you that amount. Who would be in the wrong?

I would make them send me an official offer sheet prior to taking the job. Matter of fact I always do this and made my wife get an official offer sheet before taking her current job. When she asked for one they told her they were a small company and don't usually do things like that. I told her to tell them that she needed her salary in writing or she can't tale the job. They sent the offer sheet the next day.

You have to get it in writing or they can bait and switch you and you have no recourse.
